Alexander de Caires

Since my art foundation degree at Central Saint Martins, I have studied at universities in the UK, Czech Republic, Spain and Netherlands. I received the Morgan Carn Design award for my work at the University of Brighton, where I achieved a Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours, and had projects published whilst at the Technical University of Delft, where I completed my Masters with distinction.

In the past two years I have been at the heart of group projects, including Maldives Matter, a project seeking sustainable architectural solutions for island communities. This summer I was psrt of the creative collective Group Soup which performatively built a Sauna for an art commune in the Port of Rotterdam. I have also successfully run performance and architecture workshops, bringing students to theatres and inviting the public to create architectural models inspired by performance artists.

In creative practice I have worked for RIBA award winning studio, Soup Architects, and completed my own private commissions including the performative design and building of a shed in North London. I have also been the architectural consult to renowned Artist Jason deCaires Taylor (Art Morphosis), creating designs for the Coralarium, Maldives, and Museum of Underwater Art, Australia. My current creative practice as an architectural designer for my own studio Ex Architectures, focuses on design through making, occupancy and architectural methodologies through small projects and workshops.

As my work becomes more performative, I want to explore ways to reach new audiences through artistic action. I wish to involve the construction industry and performance artists, creating explorative architectures through combined arts performances.
